Humble Beginnings

The seed of Los Guapos Football Club was sown in the Summer of 1994, when the World Cup was being held in the United States. A group of friends (recent college grads at the time) began to get together periodically for friendly games of pick up soccer. This started out as 8 to 12 people getting together in the back yard of a house. One future Guapo, Tony Garcia, was among those who started these kickarounds.

It wasn't long before word spread about these impromptu pick up games and more people joined in to what became a weekly ritual. Tony's brother Rob became a regular, as well as friends, girlfriends, boyfriends, classmates, and co-workers of the initial group. They quickly outgrew the small confines of that backyard and moved the games to fields on the grounds of local universities (Tufts, Harvard, MIT) and public parks. On numerous occasions, their games were curtailed by overzealous park officials, grounds keepers, and university police officers. But the group, determined to get their weekly fix of soccer, always managed to find new places in which to play. All the while more friends, acquaintances, and soccer-loving passers-by joined their ranks.

A Team is Born

In the Fall of 1996, Tony and Rob Garcia, Chris Marcucci, and Frank Lis began to throw around the idea of organizing the group into a team and playing competitively in a league. On a cold winter night in early 1997, the four got together at Crossroads Ale House in Boston, and drew up a list of players. Tony had found out that the Boston Ski and Sports Club runs outdoor and indoor soccer leagues. Tony registered the new team in the league and the rest, as they say is history.
The team played eight seasons in Division 2 outdoor and two seasons of indoor soccer. They won an indoor Gold Cup Championship in the Winter of 1998. However, despite consistently finishing the regular season in either first or second place, the outdoor title eluded them for seven seasons. Finally, in the Fall 2000 season, they gained their first Gold Cup championship in outdoor (Division 2A).

The Club has gone through numerous roster changes throughout their history, but a core group of players have been on the team since the beginning. Men and women from many walks of life have passed through their ranks. These have included biologists, photographers, investment bankers, teachers, chemists, mathematicians, physicians, students, earth scientists, social workers, consultants, computer scientists, and budget analysts from countries as diverse as Spain, France, Portugal, Austrailia, Ireland, England, Poland, Germany, Mexico, Canada, and the good ol' USA. All have come together one way or another through their love for Association Football. GO GUAPOS!!!
